New Post on The Official Blog of The Way Out Podcast! Today's Gift - 1/7/2017

Today's thought from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is:Don't quit five minutes before the miracle happens.--AnonymousWhen we came into the Program, most of us had very little to show for our lives. We believed in nothing. We had experienced great disappointments. The greedy creditor that was our addiction had stripped away everything of meaning to us. We were left with nothing but pain and misery. Now we hear incredible stories of recovery. People tell how, by following certain simple instructions and honestly working a Program, they were freed from the grasp of their addiction. Every once in awhile we hear a story that sounds remarkably like our own. We are told that through work and the help of a Higher Power, we too can receive a miracle. The most important miracle I can expect and count on each day is the freedom from my addiction. I can trust that if I stay close to the Program, the miracle will be repeated, one day at a time. You are reading from the book: Easy Does It by Anonymous Easy Does It © 1999 by Hazelden Foundation. New Post on The Official Blog of The Way Out Podcast! Thoughts For The Day~*~Sponsors ^*^*^ January 7

Click here now to check out our list of Recovery Podcasts!*~A.A. Thoughts For The Day~* ^*^*^*^*^ (\    ~~    /) (    \(AA)/    ) (_ /AA\ _) / AA \ ^*^*^*^*^ Sponsors Every sponsor is necessarily a leader. The stakes are huge. A human life, and usually the happiness of a whole family, hangs in the balance. What the sponsor does and says, how well he estimates the reactions of his prospects, how well he times and makes his presentation, how well he handles criticisms, and how well he leads his prospect on by personal spiritual example... well, these attributes of leadership can make all the difference, often the difference between life and death. Thank God that Alcoholics Anonymous is blessed with so much leadership in each and all of its great affairs! Bill W., April 1959 c. 1988 AA Grapevine, The Language of the Heart,  p. 292  Thought to Consider . . .  A recovering alcoholic without a sponsor is much like a ship without a rudder. *~*AACRONYMS*~* S P O N S O R =  Sober Person Offering Newcomer Support Of Recovery *~*^Just For Today!^*~* Eternal From "More About Alcoholism": "Most of us have believed that if we remained sober for a long stretch, we could thereafter drink normally. But here is a man who at fifty-five years found he was just where he had left off at thirty. We have seen the truth demonstrated again and again: 'Once an alcoholic, always an alcoholic.'" 2001 AAWS, Inc., Fourth EditionAlcoholics Anonymous, pg. 33 <<<>>> *^Daily Reflections^* AT THE TURNING POINT Half measures availed us nothing.  We stood at the turning point.  We asked His protection and care with complete abandon.  ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p.  59  Every day I stand at turning points.  My thoughts and actions can propel me toward growth or turn me down the road to old habits and to booze.  Sometimes turning points are beginnings, as when I decide to start praising, instead of condemning someone.  Or when I begin to ask for help instead of going it alone.  At other times turning points are endings, such as when I see clearly the need to stop festering resentments or crippling self-seeking.  Many shortcomings tempt me daily; therefore, I also have daily opportunities to become aware of them.  In one form or another, many of my character defects appear daily: self-condemnation, anger, running away, being prideful, wanting to get even, or acting out of grandiosity.  Attempting half measures to eliminate these defects merely paralyzes my efforts to change.  It is only when I ask God for help, with complete abandon, that I become willing -- and able -- to change.  Copyright 1990 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS WORLD SERVICES, INC. *~*^As Bill Sees It^*~* The Realm of the Spirit Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th EditionIn ancient times material progress was painfully slow. The spirit of modern scientific inquiry, research, and invention was almost unknown. In the realm of the material, men's minds were lettered  by superstition, tradition, and all sorts of fixed ideas. Some of the contemporaries of Columbus  thought a round earth preposterous. Others came near putting Galileo to death for his astronomical  heresies. Are not some of us just as biased and unreasonable about the realm of the spirit as were the  ancients about the realm of the material? <<< >>> We have found that God does not make too hard terms with those who seek Him. To us, the realm of spirit is broad, roomy, all inclusive, never exclusive or forbidding to those who earnestly seek. It is open, we believe, to all men.  ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS - 1. p. 51 - 2. p. 46  *~*^Big Book Quote^*~* "When you discover a prospect for Alcoholics Anonymous, find out all you can about him. If he does not want to stop drinking, don't waste time trying to persuade him. You may spoil a later opportunity." ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUSWorking With Others, pg. 90 *^Twenty Four Hours A Day^* A.A. Thought for the Day When temptation comes, as it does sometimes to all of us, I will say to myself.- "No, my whole life depends on not taking that drink and nothing in the world can make me do it." Besides, I have promised that Higher Power that I wouldn't do it. I know that God doesn't want me to drink and I won't break my promise to, God. I've given up my right to drink and it's not my decision any longer. Have I made the choice once and for all, so that there's no going back on it?  Meditation for the Day In silence comes God's meaning to the heart. I cannot judge when it enters the heart. I can only judge by results. Gods word is spoken to the secret places of my heart and, in some hour of temptation, I find that word and realize its value for the first time. When I need it, I find it there. "Thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly."  Prayer for the Day I pray that I may see God's meaning in my life. I pray that I may gladly accept what God has to teach me. New Post on The Official Blog of The Way Out Podcast! Today's Gift - 1/6/2017

Today's thought from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is:Others treat us the way we invite them to treat us.--Barb H.Coping with stress is a lot more difficult than preventing it in the first place. If we think prevention, we can avoid a surprising number of stressful situations by thinking ahead and sidestepping. We don’t have to have lunch with difficult or complaining co-workers, for example. We can take a walk at lunchtime or catch up on some reading. We can limit our availability to other family members by telling them we’re off duty after 8:00 P.M. If we stick to it, the others will learn not to ask for late night help with homework or for a shirt to be ironed. We deserve quiet time to build up our reserves and to fend off stress. Giving all our time away is foolish, not virtuous. We can only expect others to respect our limitations if we are clear about our boundaries. To stay healthy, we need to avoid, or at least limit, involvement in all unnecessary aggravations.I will demand the time I need each day for myself. New Post on The Official Blog of The Way Out Podcast! Thoughts For The Day~*~Insecurity ^*^*^ January 6

*~A.A. Thoughts For The Day~ ^*^*^*^*^ (\    ~~    /) (    \(AA)/    ) (_ /AA\ _) / AA \ ^*^*^*^*^ Insecurity The achievement of freedom from fear is a lifetime undertaking, one that can never be wholly completed. When  under heavy attack, acute illness, or in other conditions of serious insecurity, we shall all react, well or badly, as  the case may be. Only the vainglorious claim perfect freedom from fear, though their very grandiosity is really  rooted in the fears they have temporarily forgotten. Bill W., January 1962 c. 1988 AA Grapevine, The Language of the Heart,  p. 265  Thought to Consider . . .  Once we clear a hurdle, it doesn't seem so high. *~*AACRONYMS*~* T R U S T = Try Relying Upon Steps and Traditions *~Just For Today~* Action From "The Shared Gift:" "A.A. is more than a set of principles; it is a society of alcoholics in action. We must carry the message, else we ourselves can wither and those who haven't been given the truth may die." c. 1967, As Bill Sees It, page 13 *^Daily Reflections^* THE VICTORY OF SURRENDER  We perceive that only through utter defeat are we able to take our first steps toward liberation and strength.  Our admissions of personal powerlessness finally turn out to be firm bedrock upon which happy and purposeful lives may be built.  TWELVE STEPS AND TWELVE TRADITIONS, p.  21  When alcohol influenced every facet of my life, when bottles became the symbol of all my self-indulgence and permissiveness, when I came to realize that, by myself, I could do nothing to overcome the power of alcohol, I realized I had no recourse except surrender.  In surrender I found victory -- victory over my selfish self-indulgence, victory over my stubborn resistance to life as it was given to me.  When I stopped fighting anybody or anything, I started on the path to sobriety, serenity and peace. Copyright 1990 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS WORLD SERVICES, INC. *~*^As Bill Sees It^*~* All or Nothing? Acceptance and faith are capable of producing 100 per cent sobriety. In fact, they usually do; and they must, else we could have no life at all. But the moment we carry these attitudes into our emotional problems, we find that only relative results are possible. Nobody can, for example, become completely free from fear, anger, and pride. Hence, in this life we shall attain nothing like perfect humility and love. So we shall have to settle, respecting most of our problems, for a very gradual progress, punctuated sometimes by very heavy setbacks. Our oldtime attitude of "all or nothing" will have to be abandoned. GRAPEVINE, MARCH 1962 *~*^Big Book Quote^*~* "If we are planning to stop drinking, there must be no reservation of any kind, nor any lurking notion that someday we will be immune to  alcohol." Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th EditionMore About Alcoholism, pg. 33 *~Twenty Fours A Day~* A.A. Thought for the Day Keeping sober is the most important thing in my life. The most important decision I ever made was my decision to give up drinking. I am convinced that my whole life depends on not taking that first drink. Nothing in the world is as important to me as my own sobriety. Everything I have, my whole life, depends on that one thing. Can I afford ever to forget this, even for one minute?  Meditation for the Day I will discipline myself. I will do this disciplining now. I will turn out all useless thoughts. I know that the goodness of my life is a necessary foundation for its usefulness. I will welcome this training, for without it God cannot give me His power. I believe that this power is a mighty power when it is used in the right way.  Prayer for the Day I pray that I may face and accept whatever discipline is necessary. I pray that I may be fit to receive God's power in my life. New Post on The Official Blog of The Way Out Podcast! Today's Gift - 1/5/2017

Today's thought from the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation is:God does not ask your ability Or your inability. He asks only your availability.--Mary Kay AshReasons for gratitude are easy to find. If we're breathing, we can think of people hooked up to oxygen tanks. If our skin is smooth, we can remember people suffering in burn units. If we ran into a store for a minute to buy a gallon of milk today, we can remember the long lines people in other cultures endure for the same errand. And we exist! That alone is miraculous. We have survived a chronic, often fatal disease. For many of us, life is better than before addiction, because we've found a new appreciation for life, a new depth and peace, a new calmness. And we can continue to grow in recovery each beautiful day that is given to us. Today, babies across the world are being born, bringing millions of hopeful and exciting possibilities into our world. Now, we're ready to take our place in the sun as one of the world's new hopeful possibilities. We live and breathe and feel and think, and we are watched over by a Higher Power who loves us and has a plan for our lives.Today let me look for the good in my world and be thankful. New Post on The Official Blog of The Way Out Podcast! Thoughts For The Day~*~Resentments ^*^*^ January 5

*~A.A. Thoughts For The Day~* ^*^*^*^*^ (\    ~~    /) (    \(AA)/    ) (_ /AA\ _) / AA \ ^*^*^*^*^ Resentments Few people have been more victimized by resentments than have we alcoholics. It mattered little whether our resentments were justified or not. A burst of temper could spoil a day, and a well- nursed grudge could make us miserably ineffective. Nor were we ever skillful in separating justified  from unjustified anger. As we saw it, our wrath was always justified. Anger, that occasional luxury  of more balanced people, could keep us on an emotional jag indefinitely. These emotional "dry  benders" often led straight to the bottle. Other kinds of disturbance -- jealousy, envy, self-pity, or  hurt pride -- did the same thing. c. 1952 AAWS, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, p. 90 Thought to Consider . . . Anger is the hot wind that extinguishes the light of reason. *~*AACRONYMS*~* C A L M =  Can Anger Leave Me. *~Just For Today~* Essentials From "'Let's Keep It Simple'": "After years of sobriety I occasionally ask myself: 'Can it be this simple?' Then, at meetings, I see former cynics and skeptics who have walked the A.A. path out of hell by packaging their lives, without alcohol, into twenty-four hour segments, during which they practice a few principles to the best of their individual abilities. And then I know again that, while it isn't always easy, if I keep it simple, it works." 1990 AAWS, Inc.; Daily Reflections, pg. 30 *~Daily Reflections~* TOTAL ACCEPTANCE He cannot picture life without alcohol. Some day he will be unable to imagine life either with alcohol or without it.  Then he will know loneliness such as few do.  He will be at the jumping-off place.  He will wish for the end. ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, p.  152 Only an alcoholic can understand the exact meaning of a statement like this one.  The double standard that held me captive as an active alcoholic also filled me with terror and confusion: "If I don't get a drink I'm going to die," competed with "If I continue drinking it's going to kill me." Both compulsive thoughts pushed me ever closer to the bottom.  That bottom produced a total acceptance of my alcoholism -- with no reservations whatsoever -- and one that was absolutely essential for my recovery.  It was a dilemma unlike anything I had ever faced, but as I found out later on, a necessary one if I was to succeed in this program. Copyright 1990 ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS WORLD SERVICES, INC. *~As Bill Sees it~* Maintenance and Growth It is plain that a life which includes deep resentment leads only to futility and unhappiness. To the precise extent that we permit these, do we squander the hours that might have been worthwhile. But with the alcoholic, whose hope is the maintenance and growth of a spiritual experience, this business of harboring resentment is infinitely grave. For then we shut ourselves off from the sunlight of the spirit. The insanity of alcohol returns and we drink again. And with us, to drink is to die. If we were to live, we had to be free of anger. The grouch and the sudden rage were not for us. Anger is the dubious luxury of normal men, but for us alcoholics it is poison. ALCOHOLICS ANONYMOUS, P. 66 *~Big Book Quote~* "Next, we decided that hereafter in this drama of life, God was going to be our Director. He is the Principal; we are His agents. He is the Father, and we are His children. Most good ideas are simple, and this concept was the keystone of the new and triumphant arch through which we passed to freedom." Alcoholics Anonymous, 4th EditionHow It Works, pg. 62 *~Twenty Fours A Day~* A.A. Thought for the Day Have I turned to a Higher Power for help? Do I believe that each man or woman I see in A.A. is a demonstration of the power of God to change a human being from a drunkard into a sober, useful citizen? Do I believe that this Higher Power can keep me from drinking? Am I living one day at a time? Do I ask God to give me the power to stay sober for each twenty-four hours? Do I attend A.A. meetings regularly? Meditation for the Day I believe that God's presence brings peace and that peace, like a quiet-flowing river, will cleanse all irritants away. In these quiet times, God will teach me how to rest my nerves. I will not be afraid. I will learn how to relax. When I am relaxed, God's strength will flow into me. I will be at peace. Prayer for the Day I pray for that peace which passes all understanding. I pray for that peace which the world can neither give nor take away. All day long I put my hope in you.  Psalm 25:4-5 Bluidkiti's Recovery ForumsRecovery Links Daily Recovery ReadingsDaily Spiritual MeditationsDaily Prayers ***********************************************************Look ahead with expectation and joy. Our King & Friend walks with us into the new year. Regardless of your past, God will take the life that you offer Him and use it for His glory. What our Lord did was done with this intent, and this alone, that He might be with us and we with Him.  --Meister EckhartIf God is your co-pilot, swap seats!God desires that we give thanks as an act of faith and obedience. We can learn to trust that God will walk with us through whatever lies ahead. If we feel ourselves slipping into a pit of sorrow, we can trust that God will hold us up.Today let's celebrate and embrace what God is doing in our lives.God is always present.***********************************************************NEW VERSION OF FOOTPRINTS  Author UnknownImagine you and the Lord Jesus are walking down the road together. For much of the way, the Lord's footprints go along steadily, consistently, rarely varying the pace. But your footprints are a disorganized stream of zigzags, starts, stops, turnarounds, circles, departures and returns. For much of the way, it seems to go like this, but gradually your footprints come more in line with the Lord's, soon paralleling His consistently. You and Jesus are walking as true friends! This seems perfect, but then an interesting thing happens: Your footprints, that once etched the sand next to Jesus', are now walking precisely in His steps.Inside His larger footprints are your smaller ones, you and Jesus are becoming one. This goes on for many miles, but gradually you notice another change. The footprints inside the large footprints seem to grow larger.Eventually they disappear altogether. There is only one set of footprints: they have become one. This goes on for a long time, but suddenly the second set of footprints are back. This time it seems even worse! Zigzags all over the place. Stops. Starts. Deep gashes in the sand. A veritable mess of prints. You are amazed and shocked. Your dream ends. Now you pray: "Lord, I understand the first scene with zigzags and fits. I was a new Christian; I was just learning. But you walked on through the storm and helped me learn to walk with you.""That is correct."" ... and when the smaller footprints were inside of Yours, I was actually learning to walk in Your steps; followed you very closely.""Very good. You have understood everything so far.""... when the smaller footprints grew and filled in Yours, I suppose that I was becoming like you in every way.""Precisely.""So, Lord, was there a regression or something? The footprints separated, and this time it was worse than at first."There is a pause as the Lord answers with a smile in his voice. "You don't know? That was when we danced.""To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under Heaven. A time to weep, a time to laugh; A time to mourn, and a time to dance."  Ecclesiastes 3:1,4***********************************************************DON'T FORGET TO SMILE  Author UnknownA little girl walked to and from school daily. Though the weather that morning was questionable and clouds were forming, she made her daily trek to the elementary school. As the afternoon progressed, the winds whipped up, along with thunder and lightning. The mother of the little girl felt concerned that her daughter would be frightened as she walked home from school and she herself feared that the electrical storm might harm her child.Following the roar of thunder, lightning, like a flaming sword, would cut through the sky. Full of concern, the mother quickly got into her car and drove along the route to her child's school. As she did so, she saw her little girl walking along, but at each flash of lightning, the child would stop, look up and smile. Another and another were to follow quickly and with each the little girl would look at the streak of light and smile. When the mother's car drove up beside the child she lowered the window and called to her, "What are you doing? Why do you keep stopping?"The child answered, "I am trying to look pretty, God keeps taking my picture.May God bless you today as you face the storms that come your way.And don't forget to SMILE!***********************************************************Upside Down by Sally I. Kennedy"I am the Lord, and I do not change." Malachi 3:6"Righteousness and justice are the foundation of your throne; steadfast love and faithfulness go before you."  Psalm 89:14Have you ever laid on the grass and looked at all the stars when it’s really dark outside? Or leaned way back and gazed up at a deep, blue clear sky, the leafy tree tops and the puffy white clouds?Things look different when you look at them upside down. They look really cool! Seriously, if you haven’t tried it….try it! It’s a little dizzying but it’s neat. When things are upside down in our personal worlds, well. that’s not so nifty, and not so cool. Upside down in our lives seems to come in sneaky and unexpected ways, taking us unaware and by surprise. It’s not a stretch to easily get confused, upset, irritated or even panicky. Given a little time, though, most things sort themselves out.And the good news here is even if your world does turn upside down there is always someone you can turn to who is rock solid. You can always look to the Lord. Our Father God is consistent, ever-faithful, relentless, constantly-pursuing, lavish, and extravagant love. And, He is always there for YOU.Believe me this is good news when things turn upside down.***********************************************************I AM PREPARING YOU for what is on the road ahead, just around the bend. Take time to be still in My Presence so that I can strengthen you. The busier you become, the more you need this time apart with Me. So many people think that time spent with Me is a luxury they cannot afford. As a result, they live and work in their own strength—until that becomes depleted. Then they either cry out to Me for help or turn away in bitterness. How much better it is to walk close to Me, depending on My strength and trusting Me in every situation. If you live in this way, you will do less but accomplish far more. Your unhurried pace of living will stand out in this rush-crazed age. Some people may deem you lazy, but many more will be blessed by your peacefulness. Walk in the Light with Me, and you will reflect Me to the watching world.ISAIAH 64:4  Since ancient times no one has heard, no ear has perceived, no eye has seen any God besides you, who acts on behalf of those who wait for him.JOHN 15:5  “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”PSALM 36:9  For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light.  ***********************************************************Forget the Former Things by TomThese passages from an Old Testament prophet and a New Testament apostle always seem to have relevance, but especially at this time of year. This is what the Lord says— He who made a way through the sea, a path through the mighty waters, forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. (Isaiah 43:16, 18-19, NIV)Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Corinthians 5:17, NIV)Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 3:12-14, NIV)The message is simple. The wisdom is timeless. The practice is challenging. It is one thing to celebrate the end of a year and the beginning of a new with parties and fireworks, it is quite another to follow through with your plans to do things differently in the New Year. It is much easier to make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight than it is to have the discipline to resist the Snicker’s bar in the cabinet ten feet from you. It is much easier to say you are going to exercise more than it is to put those walking shoes on and head out the door.It is much easier to say you are going to let go of your bitterness and resentment than it is to go to the person who hurt you and say, “I forgive you.” And, it is much easier to say, “I forgive you” than it is to actually forgive. It is much easier to say you plan to trust God more in the New Year than it is to simply trust Him. It is important to make the promises and resolutions to do things better. It is equally as important to forget and leave the past behind. The passage from Isaiah says, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past.”You must forget and leave behind your failures. You messed up. Move on. Start over. Forgive yourself. Stop dwelling on the past. Things did not go as well as you had hoped they would. Okay. Try again. Stop dwelling on the past. You were hurt deeply. I am sorry. As long as you interact with people there is as risk of getting hurt. Keep interacting. Stop dwelling on the past. You did great things last year. Good for you! Do not rest on those accomplishments. Do even greater things this year. Stop dwelling on the past.Stop dwelling on the past, look for the new things God is doing, and join Him. ***********************************************************Walking with Women through the WordHello 2017Goodbye 2016….hello 2017As I pursue social media I see all manner of quick witted quotes and poetic phrases about the new year. Everyone is creating goals and writing resolutions.Me? I’ve never been big on making resolutions or setting goals. To be honest, by mid-January I’ve failed so I let myself forget about the remaining 11½ months. Maybe you can relate.Several years ago, as one year closed and new approached, the Lord pricked my heart with a Bible verse. This verse kept showing up over and over again. In songs. In sermons. In my daily Bible study. The repetition got my attention. I knew God wanted the verse to be my focus for the upcoming year. Every year God has faithfully given me what I call a spotlight verse. This year my spotlight verse John 21:22, Jesus replied, If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? As for you, follow me. Jesus was speaking to Peter who at time was concerned about what was going to happen with John.God wants me to follow Him and not be concerned about or compete with what He is doing in or through those around me.No catchy one-liners for me simply follow Him.What does God require of you in 2017?***********************************************************IS YOUR HUT BURNING?  Author UnknownThe only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him, and every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming.Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions.  But then one day, after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames, the smoke rolling up to the sky. The worst had happened; everything was lost. He was stunned with grief and anger. "God, how could you do this to me!" he cried.Early the next day, however, he was awakened by the sound of a ship that was approaching the island. It had come to rescue him. "How did you know I was here?" asked the weary man of his rescuers. "We saw your smoke signal," they replied. It is easy to get discouraged when things are going bad. But we shouldn't lose heart, because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of pain and suffering. Remember, next time your little hut is burning to the ground
